Ten Youngster Win Free Books at Colton Library

Ten younsters completed the TV Free Week Program at the Colton Library in April. Each finisher received a free book for not watching TV for five days of the chosen week.

Penny Drive Highly Successful at Colton Library

The penny drive at Colton Branch of Whitman County Library in early April was a success, netting $70.05 for children's programming at the library.

Rockford Named Tree City USA Community by the Arbor Day Foundation

The Arbor Day Foundation today announced that Rockford, WA, was named a Tree City USA community for its commitment to urban forestry.

It is the 1st year Rockford has earned this national honor from the Arbor Day Foundation, the nation’s largest nonprofit organization dedicated to planting trees.

“We all benefit when communities like Rockford place a high priority on planting and caring for trees, one of our nation’s most beautiful resources,” said John Rosenow, chief executive and founder of the Arbor Day Foundation. “Trees shade our homes and add beauty to our neighborhoods, and they also provide many environmental, economic and social benefits. We applaud Rockford’s elected officials, volunteers and citizens for providing vital care for its urban forest.”

The Tree City USA program is sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the USDA Forest Service.

Rockford has met the four standards to become a Tree City USA community. Tree City USA communities must have a tree board or department, a tree-care ordinance, a community forestry program with annual expenditures of at least $2 per capita and an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.

Communities that earn Tree City USA recognition not only have taken the time to meet the four standards, they know that trees:

• Promote healthier communities by filtering the air we breathe by removing dust and other particles.
• Moderate climate, conserve water and provide vital habitat for wildlife.
• Reduce the heat island effect in urban areas caused by pavement and buildings.
• Reduce energy use and increase property values.

Mayor Echanove, Palouse, Wash., Celebrated Arrival of 88 Books at Palouse Branch Library

Celebrating the arrival of 88 new children's books, Mayor Echanove recently served as guest reader to a room full of local children, in the Palouse Library, 120 E. Main St., Palouuse, Wash.

Proceeds from the 6th annual Turkey Leg Fun Run supplied the new books.

Turkey Leg Storytime at Palouse, Washington

The Palouse Library Presents Turkey Leg Story time

 The Palouse Library will host five different story times next week to welcome and share the new books purchased with funds raised by the Turkey Leg.

Tuesday, April 3, @ 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Thursday, April 5, @ 4 p.m.

Friday, April 6, @ 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.

There will be fun activities and refreshments.

Guest storytellers include:  Palouse Mayor Michael Echanove, Tiana Gregg, and three former Palouse librarians.

The Turkey Leg is a fundraising fun-run/walk held Thanksgiving mornings in Palouse.  In 2005, local business owner and library supporter Tiana Gregg spearheaded the first walk for children’s books at the Palouse branch.
