Poetry and Short Stories by Sue Ellis Published

Mused, BellaOnline Literary Review published two Sue Ellis poems in the 2012 summer solstice issue. Read them here, begining with a tale about her new puppy. Out and About. Then press the Next button on the poem page three times to read Running on Air , about a long-ago day on the Palouse.

The Fledgling, one of her short stories was recently reprinted at BluePrint Review. The Fledgling was first published in the fall 2010 issue of Flashquake.

The celebrated author grew up on the Palouse, and drove the ninety-mile mail route out of Rockford, before her retirement. A versitile author, Ellis publishes both prose and poetry, drawing from her experiences and memories.

Ellis lives and writes near Spokane, Washington. Her poems, short stories, book reviews and essays have appeared in publications such as The Shine Journal, Wild Violet, The Christian Science Monitor, Internew Review of Books, and The Cynic Online Magazine. She's a member of Internet Writing Workshop.

City of Palouse Updating No Contact List

We are updating our Solicitor’s No Contact List.  If you want to be kept on it and/or added to the list, please reply to this email or call City Hall at 878-1811.

Door-to-door solicitors are not permitted in Palouse unless they first complete a permit application here at City Hall.  Once they complete the form, our police department does background checks, etc.  If approved, they will be issued a one-year permit, as well as our no-contact list, (with no names, just addresses of homes NOT to contact).

Just a little more information….  The city usually receives only one or two solicitor applicants a year.  From now on, if we’ve granted a permit to a solicitor, I will send out an email notifying the public of that.

If someone comes to your door, they should have a copy of their permit with a “City of Palouse” date stamp on it.  If you’re on the “no contact” list, a legitimate solicitor should not come to your door (because they will have received our no-contact list).

You can report non-permitted solicitors by calling City Hall at 878-1811.

Palouse Food Bank Food Distribution Successful

Palouse Food Bank continues to grow! In May of 2012 Palouse Food Bank distributed approximately 2500 pounds of good, nutritious food to the economically less fortunate residents of Palouse, WA.

This food is available to anyone who needs it and who lives within the 99161 zip code. There are no income restrictions whatsoever.

Please donate your extra fruits and vegetables. Bring them to our distribution site on the 4th Wednesday of each month. This month’s wish list: We need more peanut butter and jelly and also canned meats. If you have a garden which is producing too much, we are happy to help with the surplus.

Our next distribution will be Wednesday, June 27th, 2012.

Your donations benefit the most vulnerable residents of Palouse (99161) residents.

We distribute food on the fourth Wednesday of each month from 1:00 until 6:00 pm in the Palouse Community Center building on Main Street in Palouse.

Last month our truck from Second Harvest of the Northwest brought fresh artichokes, onions, pears, apples, potatoes, lettuce and spinach. These foods are very healthy additions to the diets of people who might otherwise not have fresh, healthy vegetables and fruits.

We also had bread to give away and there was a large supply of frozen chicken. From a local food drive in the City of Palouse we distributed 230 pounds of canned goods as well.

Council on Aging secured 90 dozen (that is 1080) eggs! This, in addition to a local egg farm, which has very generously continued to donate their surplus eggs, has provided much needed protein to families.

Palouse Food Bank was able to distribute this food to 50 families in the City of Palouse in May. This is a 12% increase from the previous month’s distribution.

Many of these people are senior citizens or single mothers with small children who simply don't have enough income to provide any luxury for themselves or their families. The food bank offers these individuals and families hope and a buffer against hunger.

We are currently expanding our distribution and anyone who knows a Palouse resident in need of food, please tell them to come on down and take this food home to their family! We generally have lots of extra food that we need to give away - it is good, fresh, and nutritious. Please help us get it to those who need it.

We are sponsored by the Council on Aging of Colfax, WA, the LaDow Grange of Garfield, WA, and are helped by WSU's Center for Civic Engagement, WSU's Sigma Kappa sorority, Pullman's Sacred Heart Catholic Parish, and volunteer residents of Palouse.

We are serving more people every month. Please spread the word.

Please visit out new website, www.palousefoodbank.org, which is nearing completion, thanks to WSU students and their wonderful professor!

Please forward this email to anyone you may know who might benefit from this food distribution. Thank you for your help!

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered their time and donated food.

Sincerely,
Annette Klover
Co-founder Palouse Food Bank

Rockford Pioneer Museum Building Built by Dr. Frank Witter , ca. 1894

THE MUSEUM BUILDING

The two-story wood frame building that houses the Rockford Area Museum and Historical Society’s Pioneer Museum was built about 1894 by Dr. Frank Witter, a physician and surgeon who practiced in Rockford from around 1887 until shortly after 1900.  The ground floor was leased over the years by a series of commercial businesses.  The second floor, reached by an outside stairway, contained the offices of Dr. Witter and his partner in the front of the building.  Beginning in January 1895, the Rockford Masonic Lodge leased the rear of the second floor for their meeting hall, an arrangement that continued for many years.

In those early days, the rural “fence Line” telephone lines radiating from Rockford to outlying farms terminated in the doctors’ offices on the second floor, where the telephone was also available to the public.

Little is known about the first commercial occupants of the main floor of this building, known as the Witter Building, but the earliest business may have been a general store.  By 1901, it was occupied by Bugbee & Smith, a department store that was to be in Rockford for a number of years.  In 1903, Bugbee & Smith moved to a new location and was replaced by the Walls & Kindschuh Hardware Store, which remained in the building until around 1911.

In 1911, The Rockford Register reported two new businesses in the Witter Building, evidently replacing the Walls & Kindschuh Hardware Store, which apparently was no longer in business.  In 1911, newspaper ads began appearing for the Mrs. Annie Reed’s City Bakery in the Witter Building.  Additionally in December of 1911, the Record reported that a “new furniture store is to be in the Witter Building”.

We don’t know how long either of these businesses might have remained there. But sometime between 1912 and 1915, Farnsworth’s Model Hardware Store moved into the Witter Building from its earlier location on the corner of First and Emma Streets.  The Model Hardware occupied the building until July 1918, when the business was sold to L. M. Collins, a hardware merchant in Fairfield.

Mr. Collins planned to operate the hardware store in Rockford, while continuing to run his business in Fairfield.  However, less than a year later, in May 1919, the hardware business was again sold, to T. C. Graham.  Graham evidently owned the business only a short time, for by 1920 newspaper ads began appearing for the Rockford Hardware Store, under the ownership of Glen G. Ramsey.  Mr. Ramsey ran his hardware business in the Witter Building until his death in 1942.  His widow sold the business to James Christensen, who continued its operation until 1945.

In June, 1937, Dr. Witter, who had continued to own the building after he moved to Spokane, sold it to his son, John Witter.  In June 1945, John Witter sold the building to the Rockford Masonic Lodge for $500.  The Lodge made extensive alterations and improvements to the building, including adding an inside stairway, rest rooms, a kitchen, and dining and assembly rooms on the main floor.  The front of the building was remodeled to remove the large plate glass display windows, giving the front the appearance it has today.

In addition to serving as the home of the Masonic Lodge and Order of the Eastern Star, after the remodel the main floor was used by other organizations and for local civic affairs during the ownership by the Masonic Lodge.

In January 2003, after a period of disuse, the Masonic Lodge sold the building to the Rockford Area Museum and Historical Society, and now it is home to the society’s Pioneer Museum.
