Sometimes, when I'm researching a news story for this paper I stumble onto something wonderful. Usually it's not something new, but rather something everyone in the region -- except newcomers -- have known about forever.

I was writing Freeman High School news, which included a web page I'd never encountered before: a FHS link . While scrolling down the left panel, I found Community. It tweaked my curiosity, and gave me an excuse to pursue a favorite hobby - browsing the web!

I quickly finished the story I was writing, and returned to that website, primed and ready to go surfing!

Community took me the treasure chest. "The Bagpiper 2012 Edition."  My nose-for-news fairly quivered. Each issue opened my eyes to a marvelously well-written newspaper. Before I knew it, dusk was falling. It was time stop surfing and return to my duties.

Oh, but wait a minute! What was that I glimpsed before my browser shut down? Go back, hurry back. Sure enough, in the left-hand panel on The Bagpiper page, why is there another The Bagpiper link down near the bottom? Well, of course I had to click it.

To my surprise -- it whisked me to older editions of The Bagpiper, and to The Scottie Scribbler that preceded it. A whole wonderful newspaper archive!

Now it's full dark, and I have to leave, but I will browse again and again, and learn more about this rich farming area and its wonderful people.

Knowing everybody and about everything is one of the perks of growing up in a small community or rural farming area like the Palouse. However, whether you're a life-time resident of this area, or a newcomer, I urge you to follow my lead and open those archives for a fresh new look at the world we live in - as reported in The Bagpiper 2012 Edition .
